eBook readers get heavier when you add ebooks!

John Kubiatowicz, from the University of California, Berkeley has calculated that an ebook reader does actually get heavier as you load up more ebooks.

KindleThe reason for this is Einstein's famous equation, e=mc^2 which indicates that as energy increases, so does mass. When you upload an ebook to a reader like a Kindle the total number of electrons does not increase but the energy of those electrons does.

A quck bit of maths later and Professor Kubiatowicz can reveal that a typical ebook adds an attogram, or 0.000000000000000001g.

A full Kindle increases in weight by 0.000000000000003500g yet the equivalent weight of real books is 2,000 Kg or two metric tonnes. I know which I'd rather carry.
